Marco Ernesto Garces
August 1, 1981 - February 18, 2023
With great sorrow, the Garces family announces the passing of their son and brother, Marco Ernesto Garces. Marco, 42, of Somerton, AZ, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023. He was born in Los Angeles, CA, to Gabriel and Quirina Garces on August 1, 1981. He grew up in Somerton with his sister, Gabriela Garces (Aguirre), and brother, Gabriel. His impact in life moved beyond being a son and a brother. He was a father to four precious daughters, Mia Dahlila Garces (16), Miliana Garces (14), Maelani Garces (8), and Janelle Garces (5).
He attended Carlisle Elementary School in Somerton, where lifelong friendships started and expanded into adulthood. Marco graduated from Cibola High School in 1999, where he developed an appreciation for helping others. His interest in law enforcement and corrections came to the forefront in these formative years. He graduated from Tucson's Correctional Officer Training Academy and worked for the San Luis Regional Detention Center. Later, he proudly graduated from the Tucson Public Safety Academy in preparation for his role as a Yuma Police Officer (YPD).
While he enjoyed his career in law enforcement, he was always an artist at heart. He took pride in honing his talent for drawing, painting, sketching, and tattooing. You'll find his artwork in the homes of friends and family, but more recently, on the bodies of his many tattoo clients that sought his masterful work.
Marco also treasured cooking. Anyone who knew him was prepared for a feast at any time. His favorite time of year was Thanksgiving because it allowed him to chop, dice, and create to his heart's content. His love of cooking came from watching his mother, Quirina. He saw the love put into every meal and developed his skill. Marco and his father, Gabriel, also bonded by gardening and growing their tomatoes and chilis and using the freshest ingredients possible. Although Marco would never admit it, he was a master griller. His ribs were legendary! Ultimately, the true joy came in experimenting with ingredients and seeing others enjoy his creations.
Marco is survived by his parents, sister, brother, children, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and friends. May his sense of humor, quick wit, and comedic timing bring fond memories of the beautiful person he was throughout his life. May his mind be at peace, his body at rest, and his soul in glory. Godspeed, until we meet again.
