Jeanne M. Furman
October 8, 1921—October 7, 2019
Jeanne passed from this life one day prior to her 98 th birthday at Emerald Springs Senior Living in Yuma, Arizona, where she had lived since the spring of 2017 and attended Christ Lutheran. Her daughter, Susan, and the love of her entire family and many dear friends accompanied Jeanne on her final journey.
Born in Sharon, Pennsylvania to William R. and Lillian V. Matthews, Jeanne grew up during the Depression alongside her big brother, Bill. After some time in college and starting a career with General Mills, Jeanne married the love of her life, William E. (Bill) Furman, on June 13, 1942 in North Carolina. Sons Eric and Kris and daughter Linda were born while Bill served in the Marine Corps during WWII, and as the family transferred from base to base. Susan was born after Bill completed his military service and the family settled in Lakewood, Colorado.
A dedicated stay-at-home mom who happily devoted herself to raising a batch of independent kids, Jeanne returned to work in downtown Denver in her late 40's, rising through the ranks to become the Office Manager for a major mortgage company. She and Bill loved camping and the mountains, and spent many vacations road-tripping around the West. Jeanne began quilting as a way to use her stash of fabric from sewing clothes for the girls, and spent many hours in her garden.
In 1996, a few years after Bill's death, Jeanne relocated from Arvada to Glenwood Springs, Colorado to be close to daughter Linda. She joined the Swimmin' Women at the Hot Springs Pool, the Lions Club, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Helping Hands. Over the years, she made more than 200 quilts; many were treasured gifts for family and friends, and many more were donated for sale at the church's annual Harvest Festival. Well into her 90's, she served and cleaned up after weekly Chat-n-Chew senior lunches at Colorado Mountain College. Her extraordinary volunteer service and "never say no" attitude earned her a nomination for the Garfield County Humanitarian Award.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her son Kris, brother Bill, and grandson Case. She is survived by son Eric Furman (Ann) of Beverly Hills, FL; daughter Linda Schuemaker (Mark) of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; and daughter Susan Hanson (Jim) of Yuma, Arizona; five grandchildren including Ben Furman (Elizabeth) of Gulfport, FL; Alyssa Lipp (Nathan) and Ryan Hanson (Samantha) of Phoenix, AZ; and Karsten and Ian Hanson of Yuma, AZ; four great-granddaughters and one great-grandson.
