Darlene was born on January 31,1943 in Sidney, Montana to Gottlieb and Hilda (Meissel) Wagner. She was the first born of three children, and raised primarily in Sydney, Montana. While working at a local diner in town, she met Clemens Hartman whom she married on January 7th, 1961, before graduating from Sidney High School in May that year. Together they had three children, Randal, Marcia, and Perry. The family lived in Culbertson, Montana, Akron, Colorado, El Sobrante, California, Killdeer, North Dakota, and settled in Port Orchard, Washington. Darlene trained to be a Dental Assistant in Gig Harbor, Washington and was extremely successful in her career and retired after twenty-four years on her 55th birthday in 1998.
After twenty-two years of marriage Darlene and Clemens Hartman went their separate ways in 1982. Darlene remained in Port Orchard until 1986. She met Guy Selle in July of 1986 in Tukwila, Washington. They lived in Federal Way Washington and married on August 5, 1994, and then moved to the country in Adna, Washington where they resided for fifteen years. After retirement, they both enjoyed winters in Yuma, Arizona and eventually moved to the Foothills area full time in 2020.
Darlene, known as "Mutti" by her children, loved by all and well known for her kindness, endless loving heart, big smile and hugs, deep faith, lifelong friendships, and her ability to cook anything. She had a lifetime passion for dancing and loved to camp, water ski, and travel on road trips by car or motor home to see family, friends, and sites across the country. Darlene made it overseas to London to visit Perry when he was in the military and cruised to the Caribbean for her 40th birthday. She also cruised with Guy to the Bahamas, Alaska, Mexican Riviera, and through the Panama Canal. She learned to crochet and sew from her mother and never missed sending out yearly Christmas cards and letters capturing all the blessings of the year. For those who received her handwritten letters or cards, you know the gift of perfect penmanship Darlene had and why she won the first-place award for this in school.
At the time of retirement, Darlene wanted to try a new hobby. She always loved music, hearing her kids and grandkids play instruments, Perry singing in high school elite choir, Marci singing at recitals, and Guy playing the fiddle in the community and at fiddle competitions. She took lessons to learn how to play the organ and loved every minute of the challenge and became quite an accomplished player. Her favorite thing was to have family gather round and sing songs with her as she played the tunes on the organ. She deeply loved her family deeply and becoming a grandma and great grandma were one of her most prized life experiences. We cannot forget her joy in loving all her grand doggies as well. Never a day would go by she was not praying for her family or friends or lending a listening ear with encouragement.
In North Dakota, Darlene served her community in the Jaycees and was a forty-three-year member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles from Port Orchard, Washington. Her and Guy have attended Mountain Bible Church in the Foothills for fifteen years. She loved attending the women's bible studies, church luncheons, and enjoying her wonderful "Yuma family." Her other favorite activity was attending chair yoga.
Darlene is survived by her loving husband of thirty one years, Guy Selle: sister Gloria of Beulah, North Dakota; brother Robert (Connie) of Bozeman, Montana; her children Randal (Vicki) of Salkum, Washington, Marcia (Don) of Yuma, Arizona, Perry (Doris) of Yuma, Arizona; Children by marriage Jon (Jenn) of Pe Ell, Washington, Nancee of Yakima, Washington; 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gottlieb Wagner and mother Hilda Kuester, and son by marriage Scott Selle.
